Birthday Gifts: Don't say it, wear it!

For the last of my birthday gift posts (for now anyway as I fly to my parents' house on Wednesday for a belated birthday party!) I shall present to you a present from my lovely friend, James.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this grainy badly lit blackberry snapshot is indeed of my arse. However, this blog post is not on the topic of my arse, but the pants that conceal it. These American Apparel undies don a slogan that surprisingly some find confusing or offensive. Lets find out why?

American Apparel say this of their undies: "In the fall of 2008, Proposition 8 passed in California, striking down the legalization of same-sex marriage. Since that time, several states across the country have voted to legalize same-sex marriage, or recognize those performed in other states.

"With many of our employees and customers identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, we are a company that is vocal about our support for the protection and advancement of gay rights, and we hope that the rest of our fifty states take the necessary steps toward equal rights for all, and legalize same-sex marriage."

Although the American Apparel undies are targeted toward marriage equality, they say something more for me.

Here is a list of the countries in the world where to be gay is illegal. The * identifies where lesbianism isn't considered illegal:

Afganista, Algeria, Angola, Antiqua and Barbuda, *Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Bhutan, Botswana, *Brunei, Burundi, Cameroon, *Cook Islands, Djibouti (unknown status), Dominica, Eritrea, Ethiopia, *Gambia, *Gaza, Ghana, *Grenada, Guinea, *Guyana, *India, Iran, *Iraq, *Jamaica, *Kenya, *Kiribati, *Kuwait, Lebanon, *Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, *Malawi, *Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, *Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, *Myanmar, *Namibia, *Nauru, Nicaragua, *Nigeria, Oman, *Pakistan, *Palau, *Papua New Guinea, Qatar, *Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi-Arabia, Senegal, *Seychelles, *Sierra Leone, *Singapore, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland (female/female-unclear), Syria (female/female-unclear), *Tanzania, Togo, *Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (plans to repeal the law), *Turkmesistan, *Tuvalu, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, *Uzbekistan, *Western Samoa, Yemen, *Zambia, *Zimbabwe

Rather scary isn't it, and that isn't all, other countries like Egypt don't have specific laws but use the laws they do have to condemn Gay people. A simple YouTube search will find you many videos about this topic including some where the images of the too many people hung, stoned and shot dead because of their sexuality are featured. Remember the two boys hung in Iran recently? They were hung with their father's belts...

Fashion is always forward thinking, liberal, expressive and about love and passion and freedom (this is why I love it). When multinational fashion brands like American Apparel step up for Gay Rights, it not only propels the fight but also opens a whole new customer base for that brand. Similarly, supporting the destruction of gay rights can have a negative effect on your customer base should you be the CEO of a fashion brand.

Urban Outfitters are one such brand whose CEO finances a Senator in the USA who believes letting gay couples marry is akin to letting "people marry goldfish". Bizarre isn't it. Read a brilliant article by awakenedaesthetic here.

Some lovely people who really care about what these panties say.
(The one in the shades bought them!)

Should you want to buy some delicious panties like mine click here, also take a visit to the Legalize Gay (love the incorrect/american spelling) website here.

Tomorrow's post will feature party photos from Christopher Hulme's (The blonde on the right in the photo) 19th Birthday bash (a name to watch) and some interesting home-made spectacles!
